Our Congregation

St John’s is a lively, hopeful church.

We offer:

  • Sunday Services of Holy Eucharist at 8am and 10 am and Wednesdays at 11:45 am
  • Sunday School and Nursery care for children from birth through middle school
  • St John’s Preschool, a 1/2 day Preschool program open to the community
  • St. John’s is an active, growing parish striving to follow the message of Christ, welcoming one and all who would join us in our worship and service.

We are "all sorts and conditions" of people, in ages, backgrounds, interests, livelihoods, and outlooks. Some have been here their whole lives and some have just moved to the area. We like the diversity and prize the fabric of life it provides. Worship, education, outreach, and fellowship are important to all, though each may rank them differently.

There are 14 doors into our buildings and our front door to church faces away from Durham Road, so it is not always easy to find your way in. We can't change the architecture but we work hard to be welcoming and make St. John's an important place for each and every one in their Christian journey.

Sunday Services

At 8:00 and 10:00 am each Sunday, you will find us using The Holy Eucharist, Rite Two with music at 10:00 am. Baptisms and other life-event liturgies are also regularly celebrated.

All who are baptized are invited to receive communion; and, regardless of baptism, all are welcome to the ministries of St. John's. All children are welcome in worship and those from nursery/Sunday School join their parents to participate in communion.

Sunday School

Religious education begins at home, and our educational program are to help us in our daily roles as learners and educators.

Sunday School for young people is every Sunday at 10:00 am. Infant and toddler care, and group-graded classes for elementary, primary, and secondary ages take place regularly.

Young people join their families for communion at the time of the Peace, after about 40 minutes of class time.

Adult classes are seasonally offered at 9:00 am on Sunday. Additional mid-week educational events are scheduled at times such as Lent.

Communion for me or my children

All who are baptized are welcome to receive communion — Bread and Wine, either one or both. The wafer is consumed and may be followed by a sip of wine or may be dipped in the cup and then consumed. Non wheat wafers are available — just ask. Young or old who do not yet receive are invited to the communion rail for a blessing. If you wish only a blessing, please cross your ams over your chest. Following the services, please join us for some refreshments in the parish hall to help us better say “welcome.”

We periodically have classes for parents and children on receiving confirmation, and the Rector is happy to meet with parents about instruction for children at any time.

Baptism for me or my child

Baptism, is full initiation into Christ's body the church. If you have been baptized with water and the name of the Trinity, we honor that and do not repeat baptisms. We do baptisms within the context of public worship.

Please contact the Church office for upcoming dates and to schedule a baptism.

Confirmation

All who are baptized are expected to make a mature, public affirmation of their faith at the age of discretion, in the service of Confirmation when our Bishop is present. Confirmation classes are held to prepare older teens and adults for this event. If you are interested in being confirmed, please contact the office.

Help in Need - as in crisis, illness, or death

In the event of serious illness, death or life crisis, please remember that the Rector needs to be called. All of us want to be of help and the parish has a variety of ways of helping with long and short term needs.

Ways of becoming a member

If you would like to become a member here, let the office know. We will ask your present church to send your membership to St. John's. It is as simple as that. When your membership information is received, you are an 'enrolled member.'

Baptism is the singular event making one a member of the Christian Church. Confirmation is required to serve on the Vestry or certain diocesan offices, but is not required for participating in the other ministries of St. John's.

All are invited to 'check out' the church, to ask the Rector for time to talk about this church and their choice.
